The question words in Thai เนƒเธ„เธฃ (krai), เน€เธกเธทเนˆเธญเน„เธฃ (mรชua rai), เธ—เธตเนˆเน„เธซเธ™ (tรชe nฤƒi), เธญเธฐเน„เธฃ (ร -rai), เน„เธซเธ™ (nฤƒi), เธญเธขเนˆเธฒเธ‡เน„เธฃ (yร ang rai) (who, when, where, what, which, how) can become whoever, whenever, wherever, whatever, whichever, and however depending on the sentence. Let me explain.

In a question, the question words need to be put at the end of the sentence (except เน€เธกเธทเนˆเธญเน„เธฃ mรชua rai  which can also be placed in front). But to change it the question words to “-ever” you have to put them at the beginning of the sentence. Let’s take a look at some examples for question words.

whoever-whenever, wherever, whatever, whichever, however in Thai

How to turn question words into -ever

Place the question word + เธ—เธตเนˆ in front of the sentence to make it ‘-ever’ (whoever, whenever, wherever, whatever, whichever, however). You can also put เธเน‡เธ•เธฒเธก gรดr dtaam in between. It’s optional.

The formula is: question word + เธ—เธตเนˆ + rest of sentence.

Whoever in Thai

  • Whoever doesn’t want to do, doesn’t have to do.
    เนƒเธ„เธฃ(เธเน‡เธ•เธฒเธก)เธ—เธตเนˆเน„เธกเนˆเธญเธขเธฒเธเธ—เธณเธเน‡เน„เธกเนˆเธ•เน‰เธญเธ‡เธ—เธณ
krai (gรดr dtaam) tรชe mรขi yร ak tam gรดr mรขi dtรดng tam

Whenever in Thai

  • Whenever I call you I want you to drive out.
    เน€เธกเธทเนˆเธญเน„เธฃ(เธเน‡เธ•เธฒเธก)เธ—เธตเนˆเธ‰เธฑเธ™เน‚เธ—เธฃเน„เธ›เนƒเธซเน‰เน€เธ˜เธญเธ‚เธฑเธšเธฃเธ–เธญเธญเธเธกเธฒ
mรชua rai  (gรดr dtaam) tรชe chฤƒn toh bpai hรขi ter kร p rรณt รฒk maa

Wherever in Thai

  • Wherever you are, that’s where I will be.
    เธ—เธตเนˆเน„เธซเธ™(เธเน‡เธ•เธฒเธก)เธ—เธตเนˆเธกเธตเธ„เธธเธ“เธ—เธตเนˆเธ™เธฑเนˆเธ™เธเน‡เธกเธตเธœเธก
tรชe nฤƒi (gรดr dtaam) tรชe mee kun tรชe nรขn gรดr mee pลm

Whatever in Thai

  • Whatever he says, don’t believe him
    เธญเธฐเน„เธฃ(เธเน‡เธ•เธฒเธก)เธ—เธตเนˆเน€เธ‚เธฒเธžเธนเธ”เน„เธกเนˆเธ•เน‰เธญเธ‡เน„เธ›เธŸเธฑเธ‡
ร -rai (gรดr dtaam) tรชe kฤƒo pรดot mรขi dtรดng bpai fang

  • Whatever you choose is fine
    เธญเธฐเน„เธฃเธ—เธตเนˆเธ„เธธเธ“เน€เธฅเธทเธญเธเธเน‡เธ”เธตเธซเธกเธ”
ร -rai tรชe kun lรชuak gรดr dee mรฒt

Whichever in Thai

Whichever requires a classifier in front of เน„เธซเธ™. For example, เธญเธฑเธ™เน„เธซเธ™ (an nฤƒi), เธ„เธ™เน„เธซเธ™ (kon nฤƒi), etc.

  • Whichever person wants to go get out of the car immediately
    เธ„เธ™เน„เธซเธ™เธ—เธตเนˆเธญเธขเธฒเธเน„เธ›เธŠเนˆเธงเธขเธ‚เธถเน‰เธ™เธฃเธ–เธ—เธฑเธ™เธ—เธต
kon nฤƒi tรชe yร ak bpai chรปay kรชun rรณt tan tee

  • Whichever you want tell me
    เธญเธฑเธ™เน„เธซเธ™เธ—เธตเนˆเธญเธขเธฒเธเน„เธ”เน‰เธเน‡เธšเธญเธ
an nฤƒi tรชe yร ak dรขai gรดr bรฒk

However in Thai

The exception to the rule is “however”. เธญเธขเนˆเธฒเธ‡เน„เธฃเธ—เธตเนˆ is not spoken in Thai. And เธญเธขเนˆเธฒเธ‡เน„เธฃเธเน‡เธ•เธฒเธก means however but in the other sense such as in the sentence “I like her however she doesn’t like me”.

If you want to say “however” you would say เธญเธขเนˆเธฒเธ‡เน„เธฃเธเน‡เน„เธ”เน‰ (yร ang rai gรดr dรขai).

  • However you write it is fine
    เน€เธ‚เธตเธขเธ™เธญเธขเนˆเธฒเธ‡เน„เธฃเธเน‡เน„เธ”เน‰
kฤญan yร ang rai gรดr dรขai

Question word + เธเน‡เน„เธ”เน‰

If you want to omit all the information and just say like whoever is fine, whatever is fine, whenever is fine, etc. All you have to do is say the question word + เธเน‡เน„เธ”เน‰ (gรดr dรขai).

Please note that เธเน‡เน„เธ”เน‰ (gรดr dรขai) means ‘it’s fine, it’s okay, it’s possible’.

Let me show you examples:

  • Whoever is fine
    เนƒเธ„เธฃเธเน‡เน„เธ”เน‰
    krai gรดr dรขai
  • Whenever is fine
    เน€เธกเธทเนˆเธญเน„เธฃเธเน‡เน„เธ”เน‰
    mรชua rai gรดr dรขai
  • Whatever is fine
    เธญเธฐเน„เธฃเธเน‡เน„เธ”เน‰
    ร -rai gรดr dรขai

  • Whichever is fine
    เธญเธฑเธ™เน„เธซเธ™เธเน‡เน„เธ”เน‰
    an nฤƒi gรดr dรขai

  • However is fine
    เธญเธขเนˆเธฒเธ‡เน„เธฃเธเน‡เน„เธ”เน‰
    yร ang rai gรดr dรขai
