In this article, I will teach you all the vocabulary you need to know about vehicles in Thai. You will know what any vehicle you see is called.

Let’s start with the easiest word and it is the general word for car and vehicle. The word is รถ rót.

You will see รถ rót as a component in many of the words for vehicles (like bus, tractor, train, etc).

You will also see ยาน (yaan) which is another word for vehicle / craft as a component in some words (like spaceship, bicycle)

Vehicles in Thai

Land Vehicles

• Tuk-Tuk (tricycle vehicle, rickshaw): ตุ๊กตุ๊ก dtúk-dtúk
  
  
• Passenger Car / Automobile : รถยนต์ rót yon
  
  
• Van: รถตู้ rót dtôo
  
  
• Truck (like a big transport truck) / Lorry: รถบรรทุก rót ban-túk
  
  
• Passenger vehicle adapted from a pick-up truck (usually seen in Chiang Mai): สองแถว sŏng tăew
  
  
• Pick-up truck: รถกระบะ rót grà-bà
  
  
• Tractor: รถไถ rót tăi
  
  
• Bulldozer: รถดันดิน
  
  
• Bus: รถเมล์ rót may. But you may also see รถบัส rót bàt
  
  
• Tour bus: รถทัวร์ rót tua
  
  
• Horse-drawn carriage: รถม้า rót máa
  
  
• Ambulance: รถพยาบาล rót pá-yaa-baan
  
  
• Firetruck: รถดับเพลิง rót dàp plerng
  
  
• Taxi: แท็กซี่ táek-sêe

Air Vehicles in Thai

• Airplane: เครื่องบิน krêuang bin
  
  
• Helicopter: เฮลิคอปเตอร์ hay-lí-kóp-dtêr
  
  
• Blimp / Airship: เรือเหาะ reua hòr
  
  
• Spaceship: ยานอวกาศyaan à-wá-gàat
  
  
• Balloon: บอลลูน bon-loon

Sea Vehicles (boats in Thai)

• Boat: เรือ reua
  
  
• Ferry: เรือข้ามฟาก reua kâam fâak
  
  
• Long tail boat: เรือหางยาว reua hăang yaao
  
  
• Kayak / rowboat: เรือแจว or เรือพาย (reua jaew or reua paai)
  
  
• Sailboat: เรือใบ reua bai
  
  
• Cruise: เรือสำราญ săm-raan or เรือครูซ reua kroos
  
  
• Thai royal boat (for the King): เรือพระที่นั่งสุพรรณหงส์: reua prá têe nâng sù-pan hŏng
  
  
• Submarine: เรือดำน้ำ reua dam náam

Important phrases to know

• Get in a car, Get on the bus, get in a vehicle, board a train, get on the plane: ขึ้นรถ kêun rót – You can replace รถ with the name of the vehicle, so get on bus would be ขึ้นรถเมล์ rót may
  
  
• To drive: ขับรถ kàp rót
  
  
• Sail a boat: ขับเรือ kàp reua
  
  
• Drive a motorcycle: ขี่มอเตอร์ไซค์
  
  
• Ride a bicycle: ขี่จักรยาน kèe jàk-grà-yaan
  
  
• Pedal a bicycle: ปั่นจักรยาน bpàn jàk-grà-yaan

Classifiers for Vehicles in Thai

As you know, when counting items in Thai you have to use the proper classifier. You can read more about this in my article about classifiers. Let’s learn the correct classifiers for the vehicles.

• Classifiers for Cars and other vehicles (not boats or planes): คัน kan
  • Example: 2 cars: รถสองคัน rót-sŏng-kan
    
    
• Classifiers for boats and planes: ลำ lam
  • Example: 3 boats and 4 planes: เรือสามลำและเครื่องบินสี่ลำ reua-săam-lam láe krêuang-bin-sèe-lam

An interesting thing you might have noticed is that a lot of the vehicles are composed of more than 1 Thai word.
Words such as ambulance รถพยาบาล rót pá-yaa-baan (car + nurse), subway รถไฟใต้ดิน rót fai dtâi din (train + underground), spaceship ยานอวกาศ yaan à-wá-gàat (vehicle + space), truck รถบรรทุก rót ban-túk (car + to load up), etc.
