by | Apr 13, 2020 | Vocabulary

According to the Thai dictionary, the word ให้ (hâi) means to give. True, but is that it? Of course not.

Let’s take a closer look at this word that in many of its uses, cannot be translated literally to English. Here are some different uses of ให้ (hâi).

ให้ = to give

  • I give you one bar of chocolate.

ให้ = allow

This word is the shortened form of อนุญาตให้ (à-nú-yâat hâi). Many times the context tells you that ให้ means to allow so you don’t need to put อนุญาต.

  • My mom doesn’t let me go out.
    แม่ไม่ให้ฉันออกจากบ้าน
mâe mâi hâi chăn òk jàak bâan

  • Workplace allows people not come work on Songkran festival.
    ที่ทำงานอนุญาตให้คนไม่มาทำงานวันสงกรานณ์ได้
têe tam ngaan à-nú-yâat hâi kon mâi maa tam ngaan wan sŏng graan dâai

ให้ = to have/make somebody do something

This word, if not put in a proper context can be confused with the usage of ให้ for ‘to allow’.

แม่ให้ฉันอยู่บ้าน (mâe hâi chăn yòo bâan) = “my mom has me stay home” and also “my mom allows me to stay home”. That is why in order to be very clear you can put the word อนุญาต for the meaning of ‘to allow’.

  • The boss makes me work until late.
    เจ้านายให้ฉันทำงานจนดึก
jâo naai hâi chăn tam ngaan jon dèuk

  • Coach has me practice every day.
    โค้ชให้ฉันซ้อมทุกวัน
kóht hâi chăn sóm túk wan

ให้ = for

    ฉันทำให้คุณเพราะฉันรักคุณ
chăn tam hâi kun prór chăn rák kun

  • I want to do good for my mom to be proud.
    อยากจะทำดีให้แม่ภูมิใจ

  • I cook for you.

อยากให้ = to want something for somebody/something

    เขาอยากให้ฉันขับรถไปรับ
kăo yàak hâi chăn kàp rót bpai ráp

  • I want today to have good weather

nâyk-tai-sâyn-née tam hâi kun doo dee

ให้หน่อย = Please

ให้ = adverb maker

You can easily turn an adjective into an adverb.

Let’s take a look at the word ดี dee. คนดี (kon dee) means nice/good person. ดี describes the person. But what if you want to say walk nicely. Here we use ให้. เดินให้ดี (dern hâi dee), meaning “walk nicely”. An alternative to this is to repeat the word twice. For example เดินดีดี (dern dee dee).

  • quickly
    ให้เร็วๆ
    hâi reo reo

  • quickly
    ให้ไวๆ
    hâi wai wai

  • nicely
    ให้ดีๆ
    hâi dee dee

  • Do it quickly, nicely, quickly.
    ทำให้เร็วๆหน่อย ทำให้ดีๆหน่อย ทำให้ไวไวหน่อย
tam hâi reo reo nòi · tam hâi dee dee nòi · tam hâi wai wai nòi

  • Run quickly please, why so slow?
    วิ่งให้เร็วหน่อยสิ ทำไมช้าจัง
wîng hâi reo nòi sì · tam-mai cháa jang
