Most Thai words when you pronounce it incorrectly, people can still understand it. But these two words, you really have to get it right because they will be confusing if used incorrectly. Here are 2 differences between ทอนเงิน and ถอนเงิน (ton ngern and tŏn ngern)

Difference in Prononciation

ทอนเงิน (ton ngern) begins with (t). The pronunciation is simple like the English word ‘ton’ (but pronounced longer). Try to drag it when you say. say toooooon.

ถอนเงิน (tŏn ngern) begins with (t). This is a different T and it makes the sound becomes rising. Pronounced as tooo(down)ooon(up). This is a major difference between the two words.

Difference in Meaning

ทอนเงิน (ton ngern)

ทอนเงิน (ton ngern) means to give change or to receive change when you pay for something. Let’s see an example:

  • A while ago you gave me 100, the thing costs 60, I need to give change of 40 baht.
    เมื่อกี้ให้เงินมา 100 ของราคา 60 ต้องทอนเงิน 40บาท
    mêua-gêe hâi ngern maa nèung rói kŏng raa-kaa hòksib bat

ถอนเงิน (tŏn ngern)

ถอนเงิน (tŏn ngern) means to withdraw money from a bank. Example….

  • In a while I need to go withdraw money from the bank first. Now I don’t have any money.
    เดี๋ยวต้องไปถอนเงินจากธนาคารก่อน ตอนนี้ไม่มีเงินเลย
    dĭeow dtông bpai tŏn ngern jàak tá-naa-kaan gòn · dton-née mâi mee ngern loie
