เนี่ย (nîia) is a very useful commonly used Thai particle that you must know to sound like a Thai.
You might see this word all the time, but you aren’t sure on how to use เนี่ย. There are 3 uses of เนี่ย that I will explain in this article.
To introduce a subject
You can use เนี่ย to introduce a subject.
Formula: Noun/name + เนี่ย (nîia)
- หมาเนี่ย มันดูแลตัวเองไม่เป็น
măa nîia · man doo lae dtuua eng mâi bpen
Dogs (nia) don’t know how to take care of themself - แต่แมวเนี่ย ไม่ให้อาหารก็หากินเองได้
dtàe maew nîia · mâi hâi aa-hăan gôr hăa gin eng dâai
But cats (nia), even if you don’t give them food, they can find it on their own. - ประเทศกัมพูชาเนี่ย สามารถเรียกอีกอย่างหนึ่งว่าประเทศเขมร
Cambodia (nia) can also be called Khmer. - เมื่อก่อนไทยกับกัมพูชาเนี่ย ก็เป็นเพื่อนบ้านกันนะคะ

Before, Thai and Cambodia (nia) was also neighbor. - แอนเนี่ย แต่งตัวสวยตลอด

As you can see, I introduced some subjects and add nîia right after. The point of this is just to put a bit of emphasis when using spoken Thai.
Put emphasis (such as surprise, shock, confusion) on questions and statements
Another use of เนี่ย (similar to the previous one) is to put emphasis (such as surprise, shock, confusion) on questions and statements.
This came from the word นี่ (nî), which means “this”. It can be used in a way that makes the speaker sound irritated or angry. So if you are not sure when to use it, don’t use it yet.

What are you doing!? - ซื้ออะไรมาเนี่ย
séu à-rai maa nîia
What did you buy!? - อายุเท่าไรเนี่ย
aa-yú tâo rai nîia
How old are you? - เข้าใจภาษาไทยไหมเนี่ย
kâo jai paa-săa tai măi nîia
Do you understand Thai? - ทำไมหวานจังเลยเนี่ย
tam-mai wăan jang loiie nîia
Why is it so sweet? - ไปอยู่ต่างประเทศมานานเลยนะเนี่ย
bpai yòo dtàang bprà-têt maa naan loiie ná nîia
You lived abroad for so long. - มองอยู่เนี่ย ไม่เห็นหรอ
mong yòo nîia · mâi hĕn rŏr
I’m looking! Don’t you see? - กินอยู่เนี่ย
gin yòo nîia
I’m eating! - ใครอยู่ข้างนอกเนี่ย
krai yòo kâang nôk nîia
Who’s outside? - ท่ีนี่ฝนตกอีกแล้วเนี่ย
têe nêe fŏn dtòk èek láew nîia
Here it rains again. - อินเตอเน็ตเสียอีกแล้วเนี่ย

The internet breaks down again.
เนี่ย (nîia) is also the shortened form of นี่ไง (nêe ngai)
เนี่ย (nîia) is also the shortened form of นี่ไง (nêe ngai) which means “here! So obvious!” It’s similar to นั่นไง (nân ngai) which means there! So obvious!
