Let’s start with some basic words:

  • A smell / scent / odor
    กลิ่น
    glìn

  • To smell
    ดม
    dom

  • Fragrant (good smell)
    หอม
    hŏm

  • Foul odor (bad smell)
    เหม็น
    mĕn

Jasmine Rice in Thai is ข้าวหอมมะลิ (kâao hŏm má-lí). The ข้าวหอม literally means fragrant (หอม) rice (ข้าว). 🍚

Example sentences:

  • Ewww! that stinks!
    จะอ้วก! เหม็น!
    jà ûak! mĕn!

  • Do you smell that?
    ได้กลิ่นไหม
    dâai glìn măi

  • It smells so good in this room
    ห้องนี้หอม
    hông-née-hŏm

  • Smell this perfume
    ดมน้ำหอมนี้
    dom nám-hŏm-née

Perfume/cologne in Thai is น้ำหอม (nám-hŏm). Literally water fragrant.
