How to ask how questions in Thai

by | Jul 25, 2020 | Vocabulary

Asking how questions in Thai comes in many different forms. How many, How much, how long all use different words in Thai.

In this article, I will explain how to use เนเธ„เนˆเน„เธซเธ™, เน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ, เธเธตเนˆ, เธญเธขเนˆเธฒเธ‡เน„เธฃ, เน€เธ›เน‡เธ™เธขเธฑเธ‡เน„เธ‡, เน€เธ›เน‡เธ™เธขเธฑเธ‡เน„เธ‡เธšเน‰เธฒเธ‡ (kรขe nฤƒi, tรขo rร i, gรจe, yร ang rai, bpen yang ngai, bpen yang ngai bรขang).

Regular How : เธญเธขเนˆเธฒเธ‡เน„เธฃ

เธญเธขเนˆเธฒเธ‡เน„เธฃ (yร ang rai) or you might see it spoken as เธขเธฑเธ‡เน„เธ‡ (yang ngai) is used to ask simple how questions.

For example: how can this happen?, how do you do this?, how am I alive?. In other words, you are not asking how long, how distant, or how much, etc. You are simply asking how something happened or is possible.

A lot of the times you will see เน„เธ”เน‰เธญเธขเนˆเธฒเธ‡เน„เธฃ which translates literally to “can how”. You use it to ask how can or how could type questions.

The following examples should clear it up.

Examples:

  • How did he eat that cake by himself?
    เน€เธ‚เธฒเธเธดเธ™เน€เธ„เน‰เธเธ—เธฑเน‰เธ‡เธซเธกเธ”เธ„เธ™เน€เธ”เธตเธขเธงเน„เธ”เน‰เธญเธขเนˆเธฒเธ‡เน„เธฃ

Description how

If you want to ask “how was … ” or “how is … ” – in order to ask someone to describe something or some situation, you use เน€เธ›เน‡เธ™เธขเธฑเธ‡เน„เธ‡ or เน€เธ›เน‡เธ™เธขเธฑเธ‡เน„เธ‡เธšเน‰เธฒเธ‡ (bpenย yang ngaiย orย bpenย yang ngaiย bรขang).

เน€เธ›เน‡เธ™เธขเธฑเธ‡เน„เธ‡เธšเน‰เธฒเธ‡ is used when you are expecting more than 1 answer. For example, asking something about their day. Because you are expecting they did a bunch of things during the day.

Let’s take a look at some examples to make this clearer.

Examples:

  • How was the movie?
    เธซเธ™เธฑเธ‡เน€เธ›เน‡เธ™เธขเธฑเธ‡เน„เธ‡
    nฤƒngย bpenย yang ngai

  • How was your trip to Bangkok? (You are expecting they did multiple things)
    เน€เธ—เธตเนˆเธขเธงเธเธฃเธธเธ‡เน€เธ—เธžเน€เธ›เน‡เธ™เธขเธฑเธ‡เน„เธ‡เธšเน‰เธฒเธ‡
tรฎeowย grung tรขypย bpenย yang ngaiย bรขang

  • How is the family gathering?
    เน€เธˆเธญเธ„เธฃเธญเธšเธ„เธฃเธฑเธงเน€เธ›เน‡เธ™เธขเธฑเธ‡เน„เธ‡เธšเน‰เธฒเธ‡
jerย krรดp kruaย bpenย yang ngaiย bรขang

  • How is everything? (you expect multiple things)
    เน€เธ›เน‡เธ™เธขเธฑเธ‡เน„เธ‡เธšเน‰เธฒเธ‡
    bpenย yang ngaiย bรขang

As you can see in the examples, I am asking how is something or how was something.

How many

To ask how many you would say เธเธตเนˆ (gรจe). If you want more information on how to use เธเธตเนˆ please see my detailed article regarding เธเธตเนˆ here. Let’s see some examples:

Examples:

  • How many computers did you buy?
    เธ„เธธเธ“เธ‹เธทเน‰เธญเธ„เธญเธกเธžเธดเธงเน€เธ•เธญเธฃเนŒเธเธตเนˆเน€เธ„เธฃเธทเนˆเธญเธ‡
    kun sรฉu kom-piw-dtรชr-gรจe-krรชuang

  • How many pigs are there?
    เธกเธตเธซเธกเธนเธเธตเนˆเธ•เธฑเธง?
    mee mลo-gรจe-dtua

How much

To ask “how much?” you should use เน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ (tรขo rร i).

Example:

  • How much does it cost?
    เธฃเธฒเธ„เธฒเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ?
    raa-kaa tรขo rร i

Also if you want a more detailed explanation on เน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ please see my article here.

How long

To ask how long something is depends on whether you are asking about time or not.

To ask how long something is in terms of time, you would use เธ™เธฒเธ™เนเธ„เนˆเน„เธซเธ™ (naan kรขe nฤƒi) or เธ™เธฒเธ™เน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ (naan tรขo rร i). These are interchangeable.

To ask how long something is, NOT in terms of time (for example the length of a sweater), you would use เธขเธฒเธงเนเธ„เนˆเน„เธซเธ™ (yaao kรขe nฤƒi) or เธขเธฒเธงเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ (yaao tรขo rร i)

Examples:

  • How long is the movie? (in terms of time)
    เธซเธ™เธฑเธ‡เธขเธฒเธงเนเธ„เนˆเน„เธซเธ™ or เธซเธ™เธฑเธ‡เธขเธฒเธงเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ
nฤƒng-yaao kรขe nฤƒi or nฤƒng-yaao tรขo rร i

  • How long is the pole?
    เน€เธชเธฒเธขเธฒเธงเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ or เน€เธชเธฒเธขเธฒเธงเนเธ„เนˆเน„เธซเธ™
sฤƒo-yaao tรขo rร i or sฤƒo-yaao kรขe nฤƒi

How far

To ask how far something is then you would use either เน„เธเธฅเนเธ„เนˆเน„เธซเธ™ or เน„เธเธฅเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ (glai kรขe nฤƒi or glai tรขo rร i). Similarly to “how long” both เน„เธเธฅเนเธ„เนˆเน„เธซเธ™ and เน„เธเธฅเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ are interchangeable. เน„เธเธฅ (glai) by itself means far.

Examples:

  • How far is your house from here?
    เธšเน‰เธฒเธ™เธ‚เธญเธ‡เธ„เธธเธ“เน„เธเธฅเนเธ„เนˆเน„เธซเธ™ or เธšเน‰เธฒเธ™เธ‚เธญเธ‡เธ„เธธเธ“เน„เธเธฅเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ
bรขan kลng kun glai kรขe nฤƒi or bรขan kลng kun glai tรขo rร i

  • How far did he go?
    เน€เธ‚เธฒเน„เธ›เน„เธเธฅเนเธ„เนˆเน„เธซเธ™ or เน€เธ‚เธฒเน„เธ›เน„เธเธฅเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ
kฤƒoย bpaiย glaiย kรขe nฤƒiย orย kฤƒoย bpaiย glai tรขo rร i

How big, How small, how dark, etc..

For everything else, the trick is to remember this formula: adjective + เนเธ„เนˆเน„เธซเธ™ or เน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ (kรขe nฤƒi or tรขo rร i). Exactly like how it is in “how long” or “how far”.

Examples

  • How big is the box?
    เธเธฅเนˆเธญเธ‡เนƒเธซเธเนˆเนเธ„เนˆเน„เธซเธ™ or เธเธฅเนˆเธญเธ‡เนƒเธซเธเนˆเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ
    glรฒng-yร i kรขe nฤƒi or glรฒng-yร i tรขo rร i

  • How short is your brother?
    เธ™เน‰เธญเธ‡เธŠเธฒเธขเธ‚เธญเธ‡เธ„เธธเธ“เน€เธ•เธตเน‰เธขเนเธ„เนˆเน„เธซเธ™ or เธ™เน‰เธญเธ‡เธŠเธฒเธขเธ‚เธญเธ‡เธ„เธธเธ“เน€เธ•เธตเน‰เธขเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ
