Information about the days of the week in Thai

  • Each day of the week starts with วัน (wan). วัน means day.

  • You don’t have to say วัน (wan) before the days of the week as long as the context is clear. These are some examples:

    1. จันทร์หน้าจะไปไหนกันดี (jan-nâa jà bpai năi gan dee) : Where should we go next Monday?

    2. ศุกร์ข์ที่แล้วป่วยก็เลยไม่ได้ไปเรียน (sùk-têe-láew bpùay gôr loie mâi dâai bpai rian) : Last Friday I was sick so I didn’t go to school.

  • Thai people usually don’t say สบดี (sà-bor-dee) when saying Thursday (วันพฤหัสบดี wan pá-réu-hàt-sà-bor-dee). Instead they just say วันพฤหัส (wan pá-réu-hàt).

    1. Monday (วันจันทร์) comes from the Moon ดวงจันทร์ (duang jan)

    2. Tuesday (วันอังคาร) comes from Mars ดาวอังคาร (daao ang-kaan)

    3. Wednesday (วันพุธ) comes from Mercury ดาวพุธ (daao pút)

    4. Thursday (วันพฤหัสบดี) comes from Jupiter ดาวพฤหัสบดี (daao pá-réu-hàt-sà-bor-dee)

    5. Friday (วันศุกร์) comes from Venus ดาวศุกร์ (daao sùk)

    6. Saturday (วันเสาร์) comes from Saturn ดาวเสาร์ (daao săo)

    7. Sunday (วันอาทิตย์) comes from the Sun ดวงอาทิตย์ (duang aa–tít)
